THE FERMANAGH COT RACES

The Belleek Regatta is a celebration of the heritage, the cultural history and the dependence on the Lough Erne Cot during the 19th Century. The races take place annually on the River Erne at Belleek Bridge adjacent to the famous Belleek Pottery. It is held on the weekend of the 12th July holiday and is open to mixed sex teams of three in both a senior and junior event. The event not only includes the Cot Races but a number of activities associated with the history of the indigenous craft including re enactments, traditional music, basket making, soda bread making, heritage walks and many other craft events and demonstrations. This year 2022 will be the first since 2019 and we plan a great event with support and funding from Lough Erne Landscape Partnership supported by The Lottery Heritage Fund.

The Fermanagh Cot

Cots were once the main mode of transport around the Fermanagh lakelands. In the early 1900s they brought people, livestock and goods across the water.

The famous Cot racing took place throughout Fermanagh in the 1800s. Many local stories and plays mention these rowing regattas which took place at Crom, Knockninny and other parts of the county. The men from Belleek Men's Shed are building two Cots to race in this years (2022) Belleek Regatta.
